SUMNER NOTES.

[From Our Correspondent.] Our boat-slip is finished at last, thanks to the Lyttelton Harbour Board, while the repairing of the outside breakwater near the baths is also completed. The latter work was carried out by the unemployed of Suniner, under the supervision of Mr Thomas, who is to be complimented on the result. Owing to the recent heavy seas the removal of a few rocks at the entrance to the slip could not he gone on with, but it is intended to have this done at the first low tide. When this is done the boats will bo able to come and go at all tides. There were three vacancies on the Borough Council, and at first it was thought that there would be a tough fight; but owing to the lack of interest evinced tho ex-councillors were returned, and Mr E. R. Deacon was elected unopposed. ■ '■■■■■;. Our library i 3 not yet in course of erection, but wo hope to see it started shortly. A Library Fund was 1 instituted some time back, an Entertainment Committeo being formed, and to that body thanks are due for tho many successful gatherings wo have had. The "greatest success" of all was the Juvenile Fancy Dress Ball. I hear that the committee has decided not to hold any more entertainments, &c, until Christmas!! This seems a pity, as we are su-e to be crowded with visitors. ' I am sorry to hear that Mr Lake, chairman of the Library Committee intends leaving Sumner shortly. He will also be missed from the Borough Council^ for he has devoted a large amount of time to tho advancement of Sumner. c Now that the school holidays are on and fine weather has set in, the place is alive -with people, and the houses have nearly all : been taken. . It is, I believe, the intention of the Borough Council to pass a by-law affectinir the campers, and from what is said it will be so stiff that I am afraid we shall have very few camps here this season. It has been contended that the campers, as a rule, (of. course there are exceptions) do not benefit the tradespeople,' but I must differ on this point. It is the intention of one or two of the campers to buy a section at Watsonville, on which they will erect a cottage. •■..'. The members of our Fire Brigade intend holding a concert in the Town Hall on Sept. l's, and as the Brigade is in need of helmets I trust that there will be a packed house. Our local cricketers do not intend being behindhand this season. Practice has been begun on the club ground, opposite Morton's. The annual mneting takes place on Saturday next, i
