TRADES AND LABOUR COUNCIL.
■ — • — . ' The ordinary monthly meeting of. the" Canterbury Trades 'and Labour Council was held at Inglis's Buildings on Saturday. The Painters' Union wrote, intimating to the Council that it had decided to become affiliated, and had appointed delegates to represent it on the Council. . The following letter was received from the flon IW. P. Eeeves :—" Dear sir,— l have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of Feb. 5, conveying to me a hearty vote of thanks from the Canterbury Trades and Labour Council for my efforts in connection with labour legislation in the New Zealand Parliament. In reply, I have to ask you to bo so good as to convey to your Council my most sincere thanks for the compliment it has paid me in thanking me for my humble endeavours. — I have the honour to be, &c, W. P. Eeeves." A member of a Union affiliated with the Council reported that an endeavour was being made to form a Liberal and Labour Council. It was resolved — " That this Council regrets the action of certain gentlemen in attempting to form another Liberal and Labour Council in Christcliurch in view of the fact that a strong Liberal and Labour Council is already in existence; their action must tend to split the ranks of labour."
