THE POMAHAKA TRAGEDY.

Referring to the verdict of ' " manslaughter" returned in the case of Charles Matson, the Otago Daily Times says :— lt is understood that there was at firstanythingbiitunanimityamongthejury, several of them being prepared to convict the accused of the major offence, and that the verdict eventually returned was accepted as a compromise and as the alternative to the jurors disagreeing and being locked up for the night. It is further reported that when tho case came before the grand jury at the beginning of the week the theory that Mrs Matson committed suicide found favour with a number of them, and that there was not a large majority against the ignoring of the indictment presented against the prisoner.
