LAND FOR SETTLEMENTS.
A wonderful change has come over Ardgowan since the estate was taken over by the Government and opened for settlement. A writer in the Oamaru Mail says : Those of the settlers who are not at present engaged ploughing are either fencing their sections or building houses. I noticed several carpenters engaged putting up cottages. There are at present going up no less than five new houses, besides those already erected. Miss Milne has taken possession of the homestead, and has inkier employ no less than eight men and boys. This number comes up to the average employed by the company. This fact, I think, is sufficient proof that small settlement increases the demand for labour rather than decreases it. There are at present employed on the estateabout 120 men road-making, fencing, ploughing, building, &c. Already the beneficial results of settling the large estates in this district have been felt, and I venture to say that in a very few years, should settlement go on in this district,. Oamaru will once more be in a position to pay interest on her loans.
