LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Sales of Fruit. — Auction sales of fruit are announced in tin's issue by Messrs Ayers, Beauchamp and Co., and Messrs Clarke and Co.

Linwood Borough Council. — Me3sr3 Joseph Taylor and J. J. Dongall have been nominated for election on the Linwood Borough Council.

Elite Band. — Tho Elite Brass Band held a ball in St John's schoolroom on Tuesday evening, dancing being kept up until three o'clock. The music was supplied by Mr Brockett and the Elite Band.

The Weather. — The weather last, night and this morning was of a very wintry kind, but cleared slierhtly in the afternoon, when it was seen that there were good sized patches of snow on the summits of the Port hills.

Fibe — About 2 a.m. to-day, a fourroomed house Delonging to Mr R. Garland, situated in Junction Street, Woolston, was destroyed by fire. It was occupied by Mrs Dixon and her family, and was insured in the Manchester office for .£l5O. Mrs Dixon's furniture was insured in the Australian Alliance office for .£IOO.

Tai Tapu. — The monthly meeting of the Tai Tapu Band of Hope was held on Sunday afternoon. There was a large attendance, Mr J. W. Miller presiding. A good programme was contributed, the items including duets, by the Misses Field, A. Watson and M. Limbrick ; solos, Misses M. .Barrett and — Field ; recitations, Messrs T. Edmundson, \E. Watson, A. Hellewell and W. Parrett. Mr H. Bennetts gave an interesting address.

Beach Gold-wobxtng. — A party which has for the last three months been prospecting the Southbridge beach for gold, has procured one of the best American amalgamators, the " Gold King," for the purpose of working the sand and shingle. A. start will be made in a few days, and satisfactory results are expected, as another party which, for several months, has been working on the beach with* somewhat primitive appliances, has, it is '"understood, done fairly welL

The Agricultural Show Grounds. — ' The Ground Committee of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association visited the Addington show grounds this morning, and made arrangements for the much-needed new pig-pens, some sixty of which are to be erected along the fence on the east side of the ground, behind the produce shed. Arrangements have also been made for grading, metalling, and otherwise improving the approach to the •main entrance to the grounds.

Banb op Hope. — The monthly meeting of the Addingtpn Wesleyan Methodist Band of Hope was held on Tuesday evening, Mr Cutler in the chair. An address was given by Mr Williams. Eecitations were given by Violet Toomba, ,Clare Margetts, Kate Cook, Louie Burns ttnd Elsie Hannam; two songs by G. Needham, and a dialogue "Caught at Last/ by Messrs G. Parker and E. Burby, and the Misses M. Snell and M, Richie. Six pledgees were taken at the close of the meeting,

Artificial Lake in HA.ol.Eir Park.— The proposition made some time ago, that an artificial lake should be formed in the lowJying portion of Hagley Park, has been revived; and itr has been suggested that the cost should, in part at all events, be defrayed. by a public. subscription. It is considered that the formation of the lake would be a very proper work for some of the unemployed, and that there are several persons who would readily contribute, for the sake of having an ornamental sheet of water of the kind which are so popular for model yacht races and as places of public resort in England and elsewhere.

Municipal Election. — An election of four persons to fill vacancies in the SydenViaTTi Borough. Council, caused by the fttiTTTifli retirement of councillors, will be held on Thursday, Sept. 10. Nominations will close at noon on Sept. 3.

Lecture. — At the Bible Christian Church last night, Professor Dunkley delivered a lecture on " Heads and Faces, and How to Eead them/ The lecture was illustrated by limelight pictures, shown by Mr G. Drayton. There was a fair attendance.

Personal. — Mr G. S. Perrin, Conservator of State Forests of Victoria, left for Dunedin by the express yesterday. He expects to return to Christchurch in about a fortnight's time, when he will visit various parts of the district before proceeding to the North Island.

The Hobpital Matron. — Miss Johnston, the newly-appointed matron of the Christchurch Hospital, is to arrive in the s.s. Mararoa. Miss Maude, the present matron, has consented to remain until Miss Johnston arrives, should the latter be detained beyond the end of the present month.

Cribbage. — A return cribbage match between the members of the Eangiora Fire Brigade and Tolunteer Corps was played at the Brigade Station on Wednesday evening, and resulted in a win by the former by thirty-five games to twentythree. Ten men aside took part in the game.

Stjndat School TJnion.— ln a report supplied of the meeting of the Methodist Sunday School Union, it was stated that the vote on the question of whether expulsion should be resorted to in the exercise of Sunday school discipline was negatived. It should have been stated that the motion was carried.

Mobbis-ttjbe Shooting. — TheE Battery fired the first competition for Messrs Tribe and Co/s trophy, on Friday night, when the following were the highest scorers : — Sergeant Cropp 35, Sergeant Mason 34, Sergeant Gee 30, Sergeant-Major Treleaven 30, and Gunners Harrap and Johnston 30. The E and N Batteries will fire a match on Thursday night on the former's range.

Primitive Methodist Church. — A tome missionary meeting in connection ■with the Canterbury Primitive Methodist Ministers' Association -was held at the church, Cambridge Terrace, last evening. The unfavourable -weather interfered with the attendance. Mr J. Field presided. Addresses were given by Eevs H. Williams, J. Sharp and J. Clover (President of the Conference). . .
