GERALDINE COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Geraldine County Council was held on Thursday; present —Messrs J. Talbot (chairman), A. Kelman, J. Murray, Quinn, A. White, M'Kay and G. J. Dennistoun. Constable Barrett was appointed' registrar of dogs and inspector of slaughterhouses for Temuka district. The various Water Supply Committees reported the water-races all in good order. Messrs Meason and Marchant reported that the contract for re-building the Temuka Bridge was proceeding satisfactorily. The accommodation road and footbridge were finished, while the protective bank was practically completed. The Eailway Department replied to a letter from the Council that, as long as traction engines were allowed to 'travel free on the roads, a lowering of the railway rates would not stop this kind of traffic competing with the railway. A deputation from a public meeting at Waitohi Flat waited on the Council, asking it to reconsider its decision in regard to the petition to have a bridge erected over the Opihi Eiver, near Pleasant Point. The Council decided that the engineer should be asked to furnish an estimate of the cost of building the proposed bridge, on condition that old timber was used that had been recovered from the bridges lately reconstructed, but with new timber for-the decking. Mr A. Kelman tabled a notice of motion asking the Council to carry out the wishes of an old petition regarding' the erection of a traffic bridge over the Orari Eiver near the Orari railway station.
