Personal.— His Honor Mr Justice Denniaton will return^ from Hokitika this evening. ■ , The Southern Express. — The express train for the south this inorning was a heavy one. Several of the Fire Brigade teams returned home by it, and a number of pastoralists, had been attending the Earn and Ewe Fair, also went south. San Francisco Mail.— A Wellington telegram states that the;Monowai, with English mails of Feb. 22, left San Fran- < Cisco on March 7, two days' late. The , Alameda, with colonial mails of Feb. 22, reached San Francisco on March 12, the dne date. The Unemployed. — The member for Lyttelton received a telegram from the Hon E. J. Seddon to the effect that the Government was making inquiries in the Lands and Public Works Departments as to '. when work was likely 'to be ready for the ; unemployed. Cycling.— Messrs J. W. Jones and # C. Jones will leave for the north this evening for the purpose of taking part in the Napier Wanderers' annual race meeting. Mr j. W. Jones intends also to make an attempt to lower the Napier to Wellington road record. Good Templart.— The meeting of the Cust Lodge was resumed On Friday even- ■ ing at the Oddfellows' Hall. In the. ■> absence of the C.T., Bro Hassall presided. 1 A large amount of- correspondence was , received and dealt with, officers elected, \ and arrangements made, for the welfare of the Order. J The Minister op Railways. — The Hon A. J. Cadman, with Mr T. Eonayne, General Manager of Eailways, spent a couple of hours inspecting the Addington Workshops this morning. The Minister afterwards received a deputation from the Chamber of Commerce on. railway matters. Mr Cadman and Mr % Eonayne proceed to Wellington this evening. Sunday Services.— Annivei-sary services will be held at Trinity Congregational Church. At the Ciuirch of phrist, South Belt, a fellowship meeting will be held in tho morning, and Pastor George Aldridge will lecture in the evening. At the Oxford Terrace Baptist Church the Eev J. J. Doke will preach both morning and even-, ing. At the Addington Bible Christian < Church tho Eev J. G. ,W. Ellis will preach ; farewell sermons. In connection with the Central Mis3ion> Mr Bell will preach at the Oddfellews' Hall, An annual .harvest thanksgiving will bo held in connection : with the Sydenh'am Gospel Mission. j Waimakariri-Ashley Water Supply i Board. — At the Oxford Magistrates' Court '• on Thursday, before • Mr H. W. Bishop, the above Board was sued by James Taylor for ; the recovery of .£l3 10s wages. The plain- : tiff was employed by Mr Craighead, con,- i tractor on the Board's works, who had thrown up his ,coirtracts, and he now sought to recover froni the Board under the Workmen's. Wages Act. After hearing evidence and argument, by Mr Fisher, counsel for. defendant, Mr Bishop reserved judgment. .The case was a ' test one, and should ' it go against the Board, it is understood that claims amounting to over ,£3OO will be made upon it by workmen left unpaid by the ; contractor. The main contention oi the j Board in disputing- the claims is that < every reasonable means, were taken to 1 ascertain whether the contractor was pay- ■ ing the men. regularly ; and that as' far as could be ascertained, the relations between the employes* and contractor were satisfactory.
