KAIAPOI.
! The quarterly meeting of the Kaiapoi I Licensing Committee was held at the Magistrate's Courthouse, Kaiapoi, at noon' f yesterday. All the members were present, and Mr H. W. Bishop, Stipendiary MagisI trate, presided. The temporary transfer of the Kaikainui Hotel license from MrT. F. Donovan to Mr Newton was confirmed. The police reports respecting the management of the hotels were satisfactory, but it was stated that repairs were needed to the Oxford houses. The Clerk wa_ instructed to request the licensees of the premises to have the repairs effected before the annual meeting in Juno. Mr Isaac Wilson, one of the members of the committee, remarked ' that it appeared to him the police were zealous in the matter of repairs, but more serious matters were overlooked. It was reported to him on good authority that > a good deal of drinking after closing time went on in Kaiapoi. Constable Cartmill said that as far as he was aware there was no ground for the report. t The fact of the Working Men's Club closing an hour later than the hotels had given grounds for the report, although in saying this he did not wish to reflect in any way on the management of the club.
