VICTORIA BACING CLUB. [Special to Press Association.] MELBOURNE, Feb. 29. The weather was gloriously fine for the opening day of the Victoria .Eacing Club's Autumn Meeting, yet it failed to attract more than an average attendance. The racing throughout was good, but the downfall of two pronounced favourites like] Wallace and Hova caused a feeling of dissatisfaction amongst backers. In Wallace's case it is considered that his rider threw away; whatever chance the colt had by lying so far behind Cabin Boy; evi-' dehtly intent on watching Waterfall, and thus allowed the , last-named's stable companion to steal a march on him. Quivers'' ... connections did not support her to any extent. • The tremendous form which Hova had displayed oil the training track made backers feel that the result of the Essendon Stakes was a foregone conclusion, but Quiver won very comfortably, and is thought to possess a good chance in the Champion Stakes. It is also thought after the running of Disfigured in the Brunswick Stakes that the stable may prefer Damien's chance in the Australian Cup. Thefollowing are details :— THE HOPEFUL STAKES, of 3 soys each, with ■ 150 soys added ; the second horse 30 soys from the stake. For two-year-olds. - Five furlongs. Mr J.
