WORK AND WAGES.
o THE NEWCASTLE MINERS. AN IMPORTANT CIRCULAR. [Special to Press Association.] SYDNEY, Feb. 28. The Newcastle Miners' Association has issued a circular to members asking them to seriously consider the position and definitely decide whether the time has not arrived when an attempt should be made to * obtain an advance in wages. The circular also asks whether, if a ballot 1 be taken, and a twothirds majority be in favour of a strike, members will abide by the result. The circular states that every effort has been tried during the past two years to get the owners to work with the miners in bringing about a better condition of trade, but all have failed. The miners voluntarily accepted a reduction and did all they could in the interests of their masters, but the demands of the latter are insatiable, and the downward tendency of wages has apparently no limit. This is the first time for many years that a direct personal appeal has been issued by the leaders to the men. The position is considered very ominous for a general • .strike., ' ■- .
