HOSPITAL BOARD.

ORDINARY, MEETING. An ordinary meeting of the Christ: church Hospital Board was held at 2 p.m. yesterday ; present— Messrs E. D. Thomas (Chairman), R. H, Wood, H. W. Peryman, C. M. Gray, J. A. Caygill, R. Westenra, W. Dunlop, G. Wallace, J. Hamilton, S. R. Webb, J. G. Murray, Drs Stewart and Hunt. .'.-.. Before proceeding with the business Mr Gray said he had a few remarks of a personal nature to make. He had been un-/ able to be present at the last meeting, as he was'/ away at Wanganui," and consequently was unable to ,take any part in the discussion relative. -to. certain unfortunate circumstances which had taken place in connection with the Chairman and another gentleman. He wished to tell them that he had been attacked for having given information from the Board to Dr de Eenzi. He wished, to most emphatically state that neither directly nor indirectly did any information go from him to Dr De Benzi. Mr Webb, pursuant to notice, moved that the office of house steward should be ;disassociated from the position of secretary and treasurer. , Dr Hunt seconded . the motion, which : . after discussion was put and lost. . Dr Stewart, pursuant to notice, moved — : "That the decision come to at the first meeting of the Board, held on Dec. 4; 1895, : that seven members of the Board constitute the House Committee, be rescinded, and the following motion be substituted, namely —'That all members of the Board be members of the House Committee.' " Dr Hunt seconded the motion, which was lost. Dr Stewart also . moved that two members of the Board be appointed hospital visitors for each month, and that a medical member of the Board be one of the visitors, taking the . duty in alternate months ;! monthly reports to be made to the Board. , Mr Webl? seconded the motion. After discussion Dr Stewart received permission to delete from his motion the reference to medical members of the Board. : The motion was put and lost. Dr Stewart moved— "That the House Doctor make monthly reports to the. Board of all admissions, discharges and deaths during the month ; the number of out patients j the number recommended by doctors; the number of patients who are in the Hospital over two months, their diseases and the reason or reasons for their prolonged stay/ The motion was seconded by Mr Caygill, and, after considerable discussion, was lost, the Chairman promising to see that the by-law "dealing with the subject was strictly carried out. '.': Regarding Dr Stewart's motion; -it- was 1 unanimously decided- that the Matrbn should makfe. monthly returns to the Bba^, on the matter of the number of the nursing .staff,.; the duties they, were performing and their general health, and fitness for worfc/ and any general information which should 1 come before the Board. ■ ' ,' Mr. Gray, pursuant to notice, moved—- " (1) That after the word ' drugs ' in Rule 49 there be added the words ' and medical comforts.' (2) That after the word * drugs ' in Rule 73 there be added the words 'and medical comforts.'" Dr Stewart seconded the motion, which, after discussion, was lost. A deputation from the Christchurch Ministers' Association waited on the Board stating that the ministers of the Association desired to take part in .the services held in the hospital, and expressing their willingness to take alternate Sundays with the Episcopalian Church. The Association represented six denioninations. After the deputation withdrew, on Mr Caygill's motion it was decided that the religious services should be conducted in the Board-room after March 31, and that the Ministers' Association should be granted the use of the room for services on every alternate Sunday at 10 a.m. The report of the House Committee was adopted. ' The Resident Medical Officer reported that during the month of January 128 patients were admitted. Of these sixty were under the physicians, fifty-two under the surgeons and sixteen under the ophthalmic surgeon. Fifty-two operations woro performed under anaesthetics, 116 patients were discharged and seven died. Ninety-seven patients remained in the hospital on Jan. 31. During January fifteen cases of typhoid were admitted, and up to the present date fifteen more had been admitted, making thirty cases in all. Of these three cases died, one a complication with severe kidney disease died' on the fourth day ; another had been a patient in the hospital with severe illness a short time before, and the third had heart disease. Other business having been transacted, the meeting tsrminated.
