At a meeting of'Hetton miners, Mr Curley, General Secretary of the Miners' Association, made a strong attack on some mine-owners, whom he denounced as bloodthirsty and outrageous. He expressed the opinion that the time was ripe for the miners to make a protest, and he urged all to attend a meeting 1 on Saturday to consider the question of demanding an increase in the hewing rates.
BOARD OF CONCILIATION;
A meeting of delegates representing Trades Unions was held in the Temperance Hall last night, for the purpose of discussing the forthcoming election of members of the Conciliation Board. Mr E. E. Wright (Typographical Association) was voted to the chidr., The following Unions, ■ were . represented :— Typographical, Bootmakers, Plumbers and Gasnttefs; Amalga- ■ mated Carpenters, Amalgamated Engineers, 1 ;New. iZeakhd Workers and Theatrical Employes. The Chairman explained that the -j meeting had been called for the purpose of securing unity of action in the election of members of the Conciliation Board, and 1 after a brief discussion it was agreed to ' ballot as Unions for the candidates to be ( supported. . This course was followed, with ■ the result that Messrs W. Williams / if Bootmakers' Union) and James Chalmers . (Amalgamated Engineers) were selected. . The delegates present were therefore instructed to adviße their respective : Unions 1 to vote for these two gentlemen.
