SOCIETY OF ARTS.
The report of the Council of the Society of Arts for the year 1895 states that the annual exhibition was held during April, and comprised 129 oil paintings and 76 water colour drawings. Free art union tickets were again issued to all the subscribers. The society was able to redeem . two debentures of -850 each, after paying current expenses and interest on debentures ; also to allocate the sum of .£55 10s for medal-dies and medals, and for a dado to the permanent gallery. With much regret the Council records the death of Mr A. J. White, one of the life members of the society. During the year 41 members died or withdrew from, and 19 joined the society. The roll now numbers 9 life, 74 ordinary and 56 working members. The balance-sheet shows the receipts for the year to have been .£486 18s 3d, including >813 8s 6d in hand at the beginning of the year, -3107 2s subscriptions, -3172 17s 3d receipts from exhibition and -3193 10s 6d rent of gallery and gas. The expenditure was £431 2s lOd, including .£l7O 4s 2d expenses of exhibition, and .£193 lis lld building account, including the two debentures paid off. There is a balance in hand of .£55 15s sd. The assets are set down at .-24172 4s 2d, and the liabilities, debentures, at o-SCOO.
