PRESENTATION TO CAPTAIN FAIRCHILD.

TPeb Pbess Association.] WELLINGTON, Feb. 25. Captain Fairchild, who has just returned | with the Hinemoa from a trip round the West Coast Sounds, has been presented with a travelling clock, in appreciation of the many kindnesses. received at his hands. j The.Premier made the presentation, in the I presence of a largo number of people.' He i eulogised the excellent services of Captain | Fairchild, and said it was in the interests of the, colony that the captain should proceed Home to. bring .out the hew Government steamer. Besides, 'Cajrtain Fairchild, had done such excellent wOrk^ and that for so many years, that this excellent opportunity of giving him a trip Home and the brief rest which his long and valuable services demanded could not be neglected. The Premier referred to the exploring party headed by Mr Thos. Mackenzie, M.H.R., and said that such expeditions were invaluable to the colony, as opening up practically unknown country. It would be for the Government to follow up what had been done, and reap the full benefit of it. The work undertaken by Mr Mackenzie stood out in bold relief to the apathy of the many colonists who took little interest in this most vital and important phase of the country's history. 1 SSSSSSS9
