CHRISTCHURCH.
Monday, Feb. 24. (Before Mr R. Westenra, J.P. and Mr E, : Green, J.P.) Drunkenness.— A man who had not been previously convicted was fined 5s and costs, in default twenty-four hours', imprisonment. P. Fee, who had been remanded for medical treatment, was brought up on a charge of being helplessly drunk on Saturday. He pleaded "Not guilty." The evidence of Sergeant Barlow tfnd Constable M'Donald showed that early on Saturday morning the accused was running about the town in a very excited state, and apparently suffering from the effects of drink.. He complained that he had been " hunted " by men who had kept him in a tank for twenty minutes, and subsequently knocked him about. Accused, in answer to their Worships, said 1 he was not drunk on the date in question, but was suffering from sickness. Sergeant Barlow said the man had .£3 2s 6d in his possession when arrested. ■ Accused was discharged upon payment of 16s 6d expenses. Mr Westenra said the accused called at the Charitable Aid Board office, and applied for- a sum of money to enable him to join his wife and family at Dunedin.
