THE TREASURER'S POSITION.
OPPOSITION RTJMOTJES. [fbok oub own cobbebpondent.] ! WELLINGTON, Feb. 28. I You have seen the recent rumours [ about the position of one of the Ministry j which have been industriously circulated. The following, which I take from yesterday's Post, is apparently the lasVtf 'the series:— "lt is stated, among those who should be able to Bpeak. with authority on such a subject, that a Cabinet Minister whose resignation has been thought probable is likely to arrange his affairs on Buoh » basis as will admit of his retention of office. If , as we are informed, thU result is likely to ljle brought about without the intervention of the State bank we congratulate the gentleman concerned that he has been enabled to apparently escape from what would in such event have been an extremely unfortunate position." This strikes many of us here as rather a^neat way of getting out of an untenable position. Prophesy evil and abuse your man, your man confutes you by bis safety, Bay that Bomebody came to the rescue. People who do this sort of thing forget that if people come to a man's rescue in the business world— philantb ropy was banished long ago— it is a sign that his credit and resources are good. In the particular case of the Treasurer, who was meant, of course, if ariytbing'had happened it -would ' hayefallen on certain institutions of which he is a shareholder, but hardly on Jiim The 'fact, if there be any fa<ss, is that.^heir ■ '■*?*?ss kad proved good enough in, certain quarters to liav'o pulled! thed^tlujQUgh, : (J ;, -! politiM icl^cles j;h'at .the.) m<>noy.-lti»B been ' subscribed for r pr^ecfe^nglift6 Dir^i^%" the Colonial Bank, of coucse for the purpose of ripping. up. Mr Ward'a private business. I doubt much, however, whether you will hear much, more of it.
