i■■ ♦ — ■ [Peb Press Association.] \ , • WELLINGTON, Feb. 14 1 The lion A. J. Cadrnan returned from the north' to-night. Mr Hudson, of the Railway Department, left for the south to-day to attend the periodical conference of traffic managers in Dunedin, In the Magistrate's Court David Shannon was charged with assaulting William Durham on Jan. 29. Durham himself could give but little idea of what' occurred, admitting that he was drunk at the time. Subsequently .he found himself in the hospital. It appears the parties had been drinking together at the Ter-' minus Hotel, and Shannon, who appeared to have a grudge aga^pst Durham, attacked' him in the hotel and • subsequently outside. The landlord of the hotel, also the barmaid; gave evidence to. the .effect that- Shannon declared that; he would be the death of Durham. After Dttrh&m left the' hotel Shannon followed, and a, few minutes later Durham was found in an unconscious state with a wound on his right temple, contused and bleeding freely. The lobeof the rightear was cut, and under his left eye there was a contused gaping wound. The medical evidence proved that a blunt instrument, a blow from a fist or a kick would produce the woundß. Blood was found on Shannon's boots, and he was arrested. Accused was committed for trial. The steamer Dingadee, from Napier to Wellington, when off Palh'ser Bay this morning, broke' the main shaft of the circulating pump. Temporary, repairs were effected, and she came on under easy steam. Off Wellington Heads she met the Penguin, and transhipped her southern passengers. .
