GOVERNMENT PRINTING.
A deputation from the Canterbury Typographical, Association, consisting of the President, Vice-president, ; Secretary and Board members, interviewed the Hon J. G. Ward yesterday regarding matters affecting the printing trade. The deputation was introduced to the Minister by Mr W. W. Collins, M.H.E. The President of the Association (Mr E. E. Wright) stated that the members of the deputation wished to bring under the notice of the Government a letter received from the Auckland Typographical Association, which stated that a promise made by the Premier during last session, in reference to Government advertising in papers produced by non-union labour, had not been carried out in Auckland, and to ask for further consideration of the matter. The deputation was also , instructed to inquire into the truth of the rumour that telegraph forms and envelopes were being obtained from London. After hearing the deputation, Mr Ward asked to be supplied with a copy of the Auckland Typographical Association's letter, and undertook to bring the matter under the notice of his colleagues on his return to Wellington. With reference to telegraph forms and envelopes, he Baid that the former were at present produced in the colony, and that the Government had let a tender ■ for envelopes to a colonial manufacturer at an advance of 25 per cent on the London price, and that he had since asked to be relieved of his contract.* jln reply to a member of the deputation, Mr Ward said they could not be produced in the Government Printing Office, but the Ministry were most anxious to obtain them in the colony, if possible After --hanking Mr Ward for his courteous reception, the deputation withdrew.
