BATHS AT WELLINGTON.
According to a telegram from Wellington, the much-vexed question of the city baths was ventilated last night, when a meeting called by the Mayor (despite a resolution carried to the contrary by the, Council by 7to 5) was held. There was a crowded attendance.,, The Mayor, in a strong speech, defended his action, the chief ground being tihat the question had been hung up long enough, Several members of the Council and prominent citizens spoke, and at times the proceedings were very lively^. Ultimately a resolution by the, Mayor, that a poll of the ratepayers should be taken, was carried. It was further resolved— " That the issues should be, first, a central bath ; secondly, a saltwater bath at each end of the city ; thirdly, bath or no bath." The meeting generally appeared to be in favour of the second issue. ■:.'.
