AGRICULTURAL STATISTICS.
■ ♦ [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, Feb. 12. The first of the returns prepared this season by the Agricultural Department is now being made up. So far only the figures for Hawke's Bay, Wellington and Marlborough are ready. Undei* the new system two returns will be made instead of one— first, of the area sown or intended to be sown, and, later on, the usual estimate of the crop that has always been published. Under the area of grain sown is included that intended for threshing, for feeding down with stock, for ensilage and for chaffing; but in the returns appended only the area intended for threshing is given. ' Hawke's Bay— Wheat 695 acres,, oats 6830, barley 1842, maize 1105, potatoes 1536, beet 218., Wellington—Wheat 7401, oats 18,597, barley 761, maize 421, potatoes 4375. Marlborough— Wheat 5181, oats 3588, barley 761, potatoes 778. Hawke's Bay-r-Horses 13,764, swine 9550, sheep 2,765.407, cattle 636. WellingtonHorses 39,209, swine 48,980, sheep 3,367,415, cattle 211,496. Marlborough— Horses 4795, swine 4147, sheep 788,643, cattle 11,679.
