Supreme Court. — Hib Honor Mr Justice Denniston sat in .Banco to-day, and dismissed the appeal in 'the case of Aitken v. Durant, an appeal from the Magistrate's •Court at Leeston. The Cape Commissioners. — Messrs Visser and Halse, the Agricultural Commissioners, from Cape Colony, arrived from . Wellington by the steamship Waihora this .morning,. and went to Coker's Hotel. They attended the weekly stock sale at Addington during the morning, and in the afternoon paid a visit to the Lincoln Agricultural College. Requiem Mass. — There was a large congregation at the Catholic Pro-Cathedral at len o'clock this morning, when Pontifical Requiem Mass was sung for the repose of :the soul of the late Bishop Luck. His Lordship Bishop Grimes was the .celebrant, .assisted at the throne by the yicar-General, Father Cummings, and Fathers Salvador, Marnane and Lewis. Father Foley was •master of ceremoniesj and Fathers Browne and Galerne were cantors. The Very Rev Fathers O'Donnell, Chervier and Ginaty were in the sanctuary. , Bishop Grimes gave a short address, alluding briefly tothe life of the late Bishop, with some personal recollections. Rangiora Literary Institute.— The •monthly meeting of the Bangiora Institute Committee was held las}; night, Mr E. E. Good in the chair. The Chairman Btated that he had arranged for the insurance on the institute buildings to be kept in force until the,reyision of the rates — now under consideration. The Treasurer's statement showed receipts for the month £Q 16s, and credit balance J522 5s 9d. On the motion of Mr j. 0. Jones, it was resolved that; the committee, in consideration of the Borough Council giving the institute a grant of about £20 a year, offer to reduce the subiseription to the reading-room to a nominal amount; and suggest that the Mayor' and, another member of the Council be members of the institute Committee. Ashley Traffic Bridge, — On Monday Mi- Lowe/ Chief Government Engineer, and Mr Burnett, District Railway . Engineer, in company with Mr J. Dobson, of the Ashley Road Board, ahd Mr Hickman, Surveyor to that Board, made an inspection of the river at the Ashley traffic .bridge to determine the best plan of diverting the main stream to a course , .under the bridge. An opinion was formed jthat by a groin and some scooping, at a -coat of between .£SO and £60, the object could be accomplished with a reasonable /prospect of the water being permanently kept under control. It is expected that with assistance from other local bodies interested in the bridge, the Ashley Road Board will carry out the work, and thereby render the river crossable, except in exceptionally high floods. Insurers' Protection Association. — Mr Robert Allan left by the Flora last evening to represent the Christchurch Insurers' Protection Association at the conference commencing at Wellington to-day. During yesterday Mr Allan and Mr Kingsland, of InvercargiU, met other members of the committee and discussed several matters to be laid before the conference. It was decided to impress upon the conference the desirability of federating the various Associations throughout the colony and generally placing matters upon a more permanent basis. Wedding. — A very pretty wedding took place yesterday afternoon at St Michael's Church, when the Rev F. Mayne was married to Miss E. Harman. lie ceremony was performed by the Right Rev Dr Julius, assisted by the vicar of the parish. The bridal party was received at the west door by the Bishop and the choir, who preceded it up the aisle to the' chancel. The bride wore a rich robe of white silk, with the usual veil and orange blossoms, and had her train carried by two tiny pages, tho sons of Mr G. Harris. She was also attended by four, small flower , girls and by her two sisters as bridesmaids. Mr Kitto acted as best man. After the ceremony the numerous guests drove to the residence of the bride's parents, where the wedding reception was held. Striking an average, English women wear shoes two sizes larger than American women.

MAsoNic.-^At. the meeting of the S< Augustine Lodge last evening, a presentation was made to Bro Widdowson. in recognition of the services rendered by him in his secretarial capacity. ' The gift was a solid gold Albert chain, with a Masonic pendant, which had been specially made by Messrs Coates and Co. By request of the W.M., Brc M'lntyre, the presentation was made by P.M. Bro Charles Hull, whose encomiums were heartily endorsed by a number of the brethren. Bro Widdowson, who had been completely taken by-surprise, made a suitable acknowledgement. An. interesting lecture on the symbolism of the Fellowcraft Degree was delivered, and it was announced that for the next regular meeting a lecture on " Light " was in course of preparation.
