His Honor said that the Official Assignee reported that the bankrupt, -who had dealt principally with cattle dealers and auctioneers, had kept no books of account which would reveal .his true position. The bankrupt said that he had kept the account sales, which, he thought, were nearly equivalent to books. The nature of his business, which compelled him to be always running about the country, rendered it difficult to keep books. The Official Asignee said that the nature of the bankrupt's business certainly did render it difficult to keep books. - In reply to his Honor, the Official ! Assignee said that nothing in the way of j dishonesty was imputed. [ His Honor said that the law said that a man in business must keep books which would show his position. The omission could not be altogether overlooked in this | case, though he had considerable sympathy with the debtor. The discharge would be suspended for six months, to be reckoned from the date of the bankruptcy. BE WALTER JAMEB JACKSON. Mr Fisher applied for the bankrupt's discharge, which was granted. The Supreme Court sittings opened this morning before Judge Williams, who remarked upon the lightness of the .calendar, there being only four criminal cases. James Muirhead Peart, J for receiving stolen rabbit-skins, was sentenced to one month's imprisonment. Ann Stewart Simpson, uttering counterfeit coin, pleaded guilty, and was ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. Henry W. Johnstone, alias Ernest Everett, altering a cheque from .£l los to .£4O 10s, was found guilty, and sentence was deferred. Cattle on the Roads. — A case which oxplains how some suburban cow-keepers manage to undersell their rent -paying neighbours was reported to the ranger to a local body recently. A man possessing a quarter-acre section kept four cows, but about half of the section was laid down in root crops, and off a portion of the other grass was cut for hay. The cows, however, were continually herded on the roads in charge of some member of the family, and barring a, very nominal penalty occasionally inflicted at the Magistrate's Court, they were kept at the cost of the ratepayers generally, to the great annoyance of users £f the roads.
