The tide was low, and she had to walk some distance across a mud flat. A few feet from where she entered the water the bank shelved steeply into deep water, so that she at once got out of her depth and was quickly drowned, her companions being unable to render any assistance. The body has been recovered. The girl was aged twenty-five, and her parents live at Pokenp, near : Auckland.
