ST JOHN AMBULANCE ASSOCIATION.
THe annual presentation of certificates and diplomas in connection with the .St John'Ambulance Association took place at the Provincial Council Chambers yesterday evening. His "Worship the . Mayor of ; Christchurch occupied the chair. There was a good attendance, the majority 'of those present being ladies. Apologies for absence were received 'from Mesdames Einsey and Gibbs, members of the St John Ambulance Association Committee. The Mayor regretted that his Excellency the" Governor was prevented from being present to give away the certificates and diplomas. In addition to the ordinary certificates he (his Worship) had to present to Drs Irving and Thomas diplomas from the head centre of the St John, Ambulance Association in England, for distinguisljeii services rendered to the Association. These diplomas were the first of' the kind tnat had been awarded in the colony. . Dr. Haeon had also been .made an associate of the Order for services he had rendered to the Association. With regard to the of ambulance, he (his Worship) .thought the thanks of the community were due to those' people who had given up time to study ambulance work and acquire a knowledge of, first aid. The doctors also deserved thanks for the time they had given in instructing the students. The Secretary, Mr S. D. Barker, read a letter from the Secretary-General of the Grand Priory of the Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem in England, stating that the Chapter-General, with the approval of his Royal Highness the Grand Prior, had . awarded to Drs Irving and Thomas a special vote of thanks for the valuable services rendered by them to the work of the New Zealand centre of the St JoHn Ambulance Association. The Mayor then presented Drs Irving and Thomas with their diplomas. The candidates who had passed the annual examinations were presented with their certificates by the Mayor. On the motion of Dr Hacon, seconded by Mr Jekyll, a hearty vote of thanks was accorded the,Mayor. ' . The proceedings then closed.
