APPEAL BY MR EHODES. CLAIM FOR AMERICAN SYMPATHY. ARRESTS IN JOHANNESBURG. [Special to Pkess Association.] NEW YORK, Jan. 13., Mr Rhodes telegraphs to the New York World that the Uitlanders are largely composed of Americana, who possess nine-tenths of the wealth in the Transvaal. He says that the TJitlanders are certain to attempt from time to time to obtain their rights, and he appeals for the sympathy, of the American, people towards England as against Germany. He asks that this sympathy Bhould be given instead of •jfcne two nations bickering over the Venezuelan boundary question. . . PRETORIA, Jan 13. The arrests in Johannesburg include Dr/ Jameson's brother and the . whole of the leading miners. The transfer of property is forbidden. Twenty thousand people who fled from Johannesburg when tho outbreak of a revolution seemed imminent are ; returning to the city. • .Two hundred additional warrants ; have ■ been issued against Johannes-, &nxg residents. . ; ■•> ; ;:-- ' CAPETOWN, Jan 13. ■' During t the crisis many wealthy Jews fled ' from the Transvaal, some dressed as women and others as negroes. pir J. Ajmerican section of the TJitlanders the same protection as the British receive. ~ The Cabinet has decided to allow Mr Chamberlain a free hand in the Transvaal difficulty until the crisis is ended.
