[Peb Pbess Association.] INVERCAEGILIi.Jan. 15. John Loughlin and George Campbell (of Dunedin), Leonard Smith and Timothy Hayes ' were charged at the Police Court ■with, betting on *he Winton Kacecourse. Inspector Pardy prosecuted. ThS facts were admitted, but Mr Solomon, for the defendants, contended that as they moved about among the people and hadno.fixed place for betting,- no breach of the Act had been committed. The Magistrate reserved his decision. The weather has been very unseasonable since the new year, and it is now raining hard. DUNEDIN, Jan. .15. In Chambers, to-day, Judge Williams granted the request of the provisional directors of the Colonial Bank to pay a first dividend of ten shillings per share.
