At Kaitangata to-day, before Mr Hawkins, Janlea Qxay.'.Tßras charged with setting fire to the Bridg"e~H6tel, Eaitangata, Mr Hagget, Grown Prosecutor, conducted the" case for the. police, and Mr Solomon defended. Gray is the owner of the hotel; property, and had for some time conducted; it himself. It is now leased to David ■■ Gorsori. Three days before the .fife Gray went to live in the hotel as a boarder. On the morning of Dec. 22, a son of the licensee and Mr Gow, inspector of mines, ;■■'• weire aroused by tte crackling of fire. After rousuig the other occupants, it was found that the fire was in a cupboard in billiard-room, where, among other' things, oil and rags were kept. After-; the fire was got out it was found that apparently an attempt had been made to start a fire in the bar parlour, a * lighted candle having evidently been put against' .the "wall.. Corson, the licensee, when he went to call Gray when the alarm was given, found him fully dressed behind 1 ■ the door in his room. Evidence was given that Corson, the licensee, would, be a heavy . -loser by the fire, and it was attempted to be shown that Gray would.be a.gainer, as the hotel was insured : for-^gld76, fiiough it cost him seven years before less than JJIOQO.
