Fireworks at Sumner. — The fireworks display at Sumner last night was witnessed byabotitaSOO people, some 700 going by the excursion trams from Christchurch. The fireworks, which were manufactured by Mr W". Stokes, were very good, the waterfall especially being much admired. Cycling.— Mr Pither, of Avonside, has received a letter from his son, Mr H. J. Pither, at present in Melbourne, to the effect that in company with Messrs A. W. Harris, W. Martin and O. Porta he will arrive in Christchurch on Jan. 20 for the purpose of competing at the coming meetin^ of the Christchxu-ch Cycling Club. Mr Pither is the New Zealand cyclist who, leaving this colony some months ago, has included in a brilliant ' circling career in Australia the defeat of the world's champion'. A: A. Zimmerman, in a scratch mile race. A Brookley domestic, aged nineteen, charged with robbing her mistress, when arrested admitted she had been backing horses.
