By kind permission, ■ \ Atl o'clock. H. MATSON & CO., 7682 ' Auctioneers. TO THE ELECTORS CHRISTCHURCH. LADIES AND GJENTLEMEN, — I bog to announce that I feel it my duty to retire from my Candidature" for the Representation of the City. As you ore aware, when first asked to become a Candidate I resolutely declined, owing to the claims of my business upon my time and attention. On being subsequently pressed to stand, I had hopes that the business difficulties could be surmounte'J. Since becoming a candidate; however, events have transpired which will compel the absence of my. brother, who is my partner, from the colony for a considerable portion .of the year. As during this time I should be required, if elected, to attend to my Parliamentary duties I am unable to see my way to continue my candidature as, in my opinion, a mail's first duty is to his family. I may say that had I been aware of the difficulties to which I haye referred I should not have consented* to become a candidate. I regret being compelled' to retire, as the promises of support ttiven me afforded me every hope of success in the contest. I -also' thank all those who proffered me their support. In conclusion I beg to express the hope that whoever may be selected by the Liberals of Christchnroh as a candidate will receive a united support, and that the progressive legislation of the past five years will be continued.
