Drunkenness, &c. — Patrick Quill was charged with being drunk in High Street on Jan. 7j with having made use of obscene language ; also, with conducting himself in a quarrelsome manner in the Plough Hotel and refusing to leave when called upon to do so. Mr Helmore appeared for defendant and admitted the charges, but asked to have the fines made ample enough in the first and third charge to warrant the withdrawal of the more serious one, which entailed imprisonment. Evidence was given by A. B. Blackett, H. Brown and E. Wilder that defendant was a quiet industrious man, and that they had never previously known him the worse for drink. The Stipendiary Magistrate reduced the charge to one of using language likely to provoke a breach of the peace, and fined him £5 and costs ; on the charge of drunkenness, a fine of £1 and costs, and on the third charge a fine of 5s and costs was inflicted; in all £8 2s. Slaughter-house License. — A renewal was granted to G.P. Pulley, Loburn. Civil Cases.— W. Fitzgerald v. John* Eoberts, claim ,£4 15s ; judgment for the amount with costs.— M'Nought v. Clayton adjourned for a week.
