The GovEBNOB.-T-His Excellency Lord Glasgow, with the Countess of Glasgow and party, arrived.it Lyttelton this morning in the Government steamer Hinemoa, from Wellington.
Mubicali.— The BiiUing-Barnett concert in the Art Gallery, on ; Thursday, promises to be an exceptional treat. '■'-. The principal item on the programme is to be the famous Rubinstein sonata for piano and viola-alta, which caused such a sensation in Germany a few years since when played by the late Anton Rubinstein himself and - Herr Balling. ,
The Late Fibe in Colombo Street.—' Mr H. C. Wilkinson desires to thank Mr R. Webber for the prompt manner in which he received Mrs Wilkinson and her daughter after the fire in Colombo Street on Saturday morning, and also those who assisted. Mrs Wilkinson and her daughter, who sustained injuries by jumping from a I. window, are progressing favourably. ,
Christchurch Regatta. — This regatta, i which is Jbo.be held at Sumner on Feb. 13, ■will no doubt prove interesting, as it is the first regatta of the season at which foiuv oared crews will meet. Every evening, now, crews are out training. A meeting is to be held on Feb. ?2 to arrange further details, and at ttie .Union Rowing Club's half-yearly meeting ,on Friday evening matters in connection iidth the regatta" will constitute' the principal business, The Sumner residents purpose holding a dance on the evening of the regatta to commemorate the event. .
■St John Ambulance Association^— The annual presentation of certificates will take place in the Provincial Council Chambers, at eight o'clock to-morrow evening. ; \ ! Opera; House.— The .Faust Family concluded their season in the Opera House on Saturday night. There was a. good attendance, and each item of the programme was well received. .
Sunday Lecture. — Mr W. W. • Collins lectured in the Lyceum last night qn "The Reunion of Christendom," maintaining that it was neither possible, probable, ior desirable. . . •
Fireworks. — A display of fireworks, Tinder the direction of Mr W. Stokes, will take- place at, Sumner to-morrow night. Trams will leave Cathedral Square at .7.15. The Stanmore Band will be preseafc.
Land fob Settlement.— The following telegram was received from the Premier on SattimJay evening: — '.'Negotiations have for some time past been proceeding for the purchase of the Highbank Estate, Rakaia, consisting of 9(i00 acres. Every well-wisher of Canterbury will, I feel assured, be pleased to know that the purchase has to-day been completed/

—Alcyone scir, Waitangi. l^inin, Ariadne , iajmiri, Truant 19inin. Favoured by their liberal handicaps, Truant and Ariadne led till almost home, when Waitangi overtook
them and just beat Ariadne in the last reach. Truant finished third, and Alcyone some distance off, having met with a mishap.
The College Rifles. — The College Rifles' camp, which has been held during the week at Sumner, will break up to-day. The attendance has averaged from twentyseven to thirty-five,, and some exceedingly useful work has been performed by, the company. Drill has been gone through several hours daily, in the mornings and evenings, with outpost work and reconnoitring on the adj acent hills. The honour of having the best-kept tent fell to Corporal Thomas. A number of friends of members of the corps visited the camp yesterday, and the excellence of the whole of the arrangements was favourably commented upon.
St Albans Wesletan Church. — The annual meeting of the teachers of the St Albans Wesleyan Sunday School was held on Friday evening, when there was a good attendance, the Eev J. A. Luxfor.d occupying the chair. The financial report showed that .£76 had been received during the year, and that the liabilities, which stood at over <£40 at the beginning of the year, had been reduced by more than half. The largely increased receipts were duo partly to the good' work done by the Band of Hope, which had contributed .£ls. The election of officers resulted in the reelection of Mr E. C. Brown, superintendent ; Mr H. A'Court, honorary secretary; Mr W. Simpson, assistant-secretary; and Mr B. Hindle, librarian and precentor. Mr J. Banks was elected assistant-superintendent, and Mr I. Daliner assistant -librarian. Band of Hope officials: — Mr J. Banks, president ; Mr G. Simpson, vice-president ; and Mr W. Simpson, secretary. The year ■was considered a most satisfactory one, and the great extension of the school accommodation had nmch increased the usefulness of the school.
