CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

The monthly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce Committee was held yesterday afternoon, the President (Mr I. Gibbs) in the chair. Letters were read from Messrs G-. Jameson and J. Beaumont, stating that they wojjld represent the Chamber at the third congress of Chambers of Commerce of the Empire, to be held in London in June next. The President reported that at a meeting held on Thursday, his Worship the Mayor of Christchurch, the Chairman of the Harbour Board, the President and Vice-Pre3idents of the Chamber, Messrs Eeece, Humphreys, Marciel and W. Ollivier were appointed a Provisional Comlnittee to make arrangements for the formation of a branch of the Navy League in Canterbury. Mr Marciel had been appointed secretary of the committee, and the President of the Chamber of Commerce chairman. Mr Chrystall brought up the question of the cartage charges on the New Zealand railways. The following resolutions were carried : — " That the Minister of Bailways be reminded again that when the department decided that all goods should be delivered from the Christchurch station by its own contractor, the public were given to understand that receivers of goods would be charged the contract rate." " That several successive contracts have been entered into, each at a lower rate than the preceding one, without, any abatement being made in the rate charged to receivers of goods." "That for many years past the rate charged to receivers of goods has been Is Id per ton, and that under the new contract, which commenced on Jan. 1, the department pays the contractor only 9f d per ton." " That the Minister be respectfully requested to give effect to the promise originally made, by causing the charge to receivers of goods to be reduced to, say, 9*d per ton."
