HOROPvATA RACING CLUB,
Handicapper, Mr J. Cresswell ; starter, Mr C. O'Connor.
The Hororata Racing Club's annual race meeting, which was held yesterday, was quite as enjoyable as the majority of its predecessors. Certainly the attendance was not quite so large as usual, but those people who were there — and they comprised a considerable number of visitors from Chvistchurch— had certainly no cause to complain of lack of amusement. With tli9 attendance below the average, it is not surprising that speculation was less brisk, and the sum o^l4lo, which Messrs Hobbs and Goodwin, who worked the totalisator, passedthrougb-themachine dimngthe afternoon, is .£7B leas than the amount handled last year. The racing, on the whole, was interesting, and Mr J. Cresswell, the secretary, and his assistants worked hard to make, the meeting a success. Alcestis won the Bangor Plate • -rather easily from Georgie Sharp, while = Kegret' scored a couple of very popular victories " in the Farmers' Plate and District Welter Handicap. Culverin, who was made favourite for the Hororata Cup, won easily from Loveshot, but Maximus, who finished third, ran some . pounds below the form he displayed at Tinwald and Ashburton. Armstrong was a trifle unfortunate in not baating Jennie in the Novel Race. The winner, who is believed to be by Holderness, was bought in at a sum ■which must represent her full value. The I\ew Year's Gift produced a capital race between Bizarre and Warrington,.and the former, who ran much better than in the Farmers' Plate, just got .up in time to win by a neck. Black. Oate should have beaten Mas in the First Trot, but stumbled badly when in front a hundred yards from home, while Telegram defeated Our Sal after an interesting struggle in the Second Trot.
