THE GOVERNOR.
TPee Pbess Association.!
AUCKLAND, Jan. 10.
His Excellency the Governor and family and suite reached Tauranga in the Hinemoa. The Governor was officially received by the Mayor and Town Clerk. The whole town was decorated and a triumphal arch and stage were erected. An address of welcome was presented by the borough authorities. An address was also presented by three leading Native chiefs, to which a suitable response was made. During the official reception a salute of seventeen guns was fired. The vice-regal party were then taken for a drive to the Gate Pah and to the most picturesque points of view, and on their return were entertained at luncheon at the Tatu-anga Hotel. One of the most interesting episodes of'ths visit occurred at the Gate Pah. An old Native from Whareroa, named Te Ipu, one of the few survivors of the Natives who were engaged at the Gate Pah fight, accompanied the party. He is a Native who, although severely wounded early in the fight, by being shot through the knee, in the face cf the European fire took a calabash of water to the .mortally-wounded Colonel Booth. The party were shown the spot where Colonel Booth lay. His Excellency and party were deeply interested in the narrative of the fight, from the Native point of view, and all shook hands with tho oldtime Native warrior, whose chivalrous conduct to a wounded enemy is so widely known. His photograph was taken at the site of the pah by Lady A. Boyle with her kodak. As a memento of the Gate Pah fight, two pieces of shell were taken away, one piece being secured by his Excellency and the other by his aide-de-camp. The party were taken to the domain, where they were formally received by the leading Natives with dances and songs of welcome. His Excellency and party were taken to the old cemetery, to see the graves of the departed heroes, so as to be able to speak personally as to its state, and the necessity of its being repaired.
