FIRE.

Shortly after two o'clock this morning a fire broke our. in a building in Colombo Street north, occupied by Mrs Wilkinson as a second-hand shop. The alarm was given by Fire-Inspector Kennedy, who, with Constable Hannafin, rescued several of the inmates who had got out on to tho verandahs. Tho fire spread to the shop next door, occupied by Mr Maine, bootin'akor, which was completely gutted. Tho efforts of the firemen were successful in preventing the firo from spreading to the Victoria Boarding-house to the south and Neato's grocery stoi'etothe north. Mrs Willrinson's stock was insured for «£i3o in the Alliance, but there was no insurance on Mr Maine's stock. A young girl, daughter of Mrs Wilkinson, was taken to the hospital, suffering from a rather severe cut to ono of her logs, caused by falling through the glass of the verandah.
