CHRISTCHURCH ELECTION.

The Canterbury Federated Liberal Council last evening unanimously selected Mr J. L. Scott as the Liberal candidate for the vacant seat for Christchurch, and urged all members of affiliated bodies and Liberals of all shades to do their best to secure his return.

The usual weekly meeting of the Christchurch Prohibition League was held last evening in Sfc John's Schoolroom. There was a largo attendance. A quantity of routine business was transacted in. connection with the approaching election. The proceedings were enthusiastic throughout. A largely attended and enthusiastic meeting of Mr Charles Lewis's supporters was held at the Central Cominitteo Eooins, High Street, last evening. Councillor Woods was voted to the chair. A motion was carried unanimously — " That all those present resolve themselves in a committee to support Mr' Charles Lewis in his candidature." Dr Jennings was elected permanent chairman of the committee. It was decided to form an executive committso, and about twelve gentlemen wore appointed, with power to add to their number. Gentlemen were also appointed to act as chairmen of suburban committees in tho several districts. It was agreed that the committee should meet on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings, and that the committes rooms should be kept open from noon to 10 p.m. daily. A motion was passed — " That the lady friends and supporters be invited to meet Mr Lewis with their gentlemen friends at the committee rooms, High Street, on Tuesday afternoon, Jan 14, at three o'clock."
