LYTTELTON REGATTA.

The race for boats not exceeding one rating, which was postponed /from New Tear's Day, was got off yesterday afternoon. The wind was light when the boats were sent away,Jbut before they had ;di*tf ted-far to^ayds , the . reef buoy the wind, came in r£^i_i.^eHno;w_^^ breeze. The following is the result:-^ '.;•-

YACHT EACE, for yachts. not exceeding one ratinjr. First prize £12, second i! 5. •, Bettina (W. Sinclair), 's9, s___in2ss^c ... ... 1 Waterwitch 11. (B. Kennett) , *90; scr ... ... _ ' Petrel 'Berkley and Denham, -84, 51sec) and Pakeha (G. H. Hobbs, "90, acr) also started.

Bettina got the.best of the start, with Pakeha, Waterwitch and Petrel in that order. After rounding the lee mark Bettina stood oh the : starboard tack in towards Corsair Bay, while the others stood on into Church Bay. Bettina got a splendid lift down the harbour, and when she stayed close to the old quarry, near Diamond Harbour, she had a long lead of Waterwitch. Pakeha, which appeared to be over-canvased, gave up shortly afterwards, and the Petrel following suit, the race was reduced to a match. Bettina rounded the buoy off Parsons Eock 2|min ahead of her rival, but lo_|t nearly 2min on the lee journey, and when booms were hauled aboard at the reef buoy the two boats were in close company again. From this out Waterwitch sailed much better, and went to windward of Bettina. She hauled, round the weather mark vat- 4hr 28min lOsec, followed by Bettina at ; 4hr 29min ssec. On the short run home Waterwitch increased the gap between them, and finished .exactly 2min 25sec in advance of her smaller opponent, but as she was called upon to give Bettina smin 25sec allowance she suffered defeat, the j jump of a sea being accountable for her tinf avourable display.
