PROHIBITION IN CLUTHA.
v The Tapanui Courier has set itself tb reply to the.queßtion,;"ls prohibitum suc, cessful in a marked 'degree ? " To show tha* it is not in that portion of the Clutha district, it is stated that on Christmas Eve in Tapanui a scene might have been witnessed that has hitherto been unheard of here. A gang of young men and youths had provided themselves with liquor in large quantities, and ere ;morning broke many of them were- in a pitiable condition. On New Year's Eve upwards of a score of young men, ranging from seventeen to thirty: years of age, were more or less intoxicated, and our contemporary thinks no previous year can show such a record. The liquor was obtained by the young men clubbing together and getting a quantity. The late severe fines evidently prevented the sale of liquor under fictitious names, and, as a result, at the public gatherings syndicates were formed and there was a plentiful supply just across the fence. The conclusion of the Courier is: that the total suppression of retail licenses is either too drastic and a menace to public morality, or that a vast percentage of .our young and healthy males are at a low rung of tho social ladder.
