We have been fairly in the carnival time ■at Cheviot during the holidays. Not only laces but social functions of all descriptidns.have been taking place. On Christmas Day and Boxing Day picnics were very general by the seaside, visitors from Ohristchurch and other places having chosen Cheviot for their outing. . The annual sports and races on New Yeair'fj Daj*, with a most successful, ball in the evening, clqsed the holiday enjoyments for a time. The sports and races were held on the M'Kenzie recreation ground in exceptionally hot weather. A majority of the settlers, estimated at five hundred persons, attended. The programme of events was well carried out, and close ' finishes were the order of the, day.
