ILLINGTON, Jan. 9.

Replying to the Premier's letter of Nov. 29, in which he asked that inquiries might be made as to an article in the Mark Lane Express stating that a certain meat agent in London had paid .£7OOO and costs in order to settle put of court a prosecution for rendering fraudulent accounts, Sir W. B. Perceval- writes *. — "There seems little doubt that'the action arose otit of dealings in American beef, and is in no way connected with the New Zealand trade." He admits>however„that the system of rendering- accounts bysalesmen at the large meat sales is very loose and requires attention.
