AMURI COUNTY COUNCIL.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Amuri County Council was held at Culverden on;'. Saturday, Jan. 4 ; present — Messrs D, Rutherford (chairman), F. H. Wilson, W. Thomson, W. Acton-Adams, J. H. Davison and D. D. Macfarlane.
The Chairman reported that since last meeting the following correspondence had been, received: From the Treasury, Wellington, stating thatthe sum of .£375, being 75 per cent of Government subsidy for 1895-6, and the sum of .£llO, being on account of grant for the maintenance of the main North Road had been remitted to the Council's credit at the Union Bank of Australia, Christchurch. From Mr W. J. Harbison, asking the Council to clear a track through the flax along the road leading to his section on the Hanmer Plains. From Mr E. Jones, regarding the state of the Upper Waiau Gorge Road. From Mr W. Acton-Adams, asking to have some men sent up to repair the Acheron Road at once, as it was in an impassable state. -
The labour' gangs had been employed during the month in shingling a portion of road near Sandford Downs, in picking off large stones and repairing the Tekoa and Balmoral Roads, in making a new cutting into the Waiau River on the Upper Gorge Road, and in cleaning out cuttings and repairing the Glynn Wye and Acheron Roads.
The receipts for the month were:— Seventy-five per cent of Government subsidy .6375, second instalment of grant for main North Road .£llO, conditional license fee £2 2s, rent of reserve at' Rotherham (Devine) £2 10s, dog-tax 12s 6d,* and contribution to water-race .£15 145. The credit balance of . the general account was .£484 5s 4d,-of the water-race account .£s9lßs\3d, and 'of the Government loans to local bodies account .£9B 18s 7d.
The Clerk was instructed to communicate with the Commissioner of Crown Lands, Nelson, with regard to Harbison's and other roads on the Hanmer Plains, and io collect at once from those ratepayers signing the petition for the water-race extension to Rotherham, the expenses incurred up to date in connection therewith.
The Overseer stated that the roads complained of by Messrs Jones and ActonAdams were now in fair order.
It was * resolved to have the Upper Waiau and Glen Allan bridges painted next autumn, to prosecute a traction engine proprietor for an infringement of county by-laws, and to give Mr Edgar Jones notice to either remove his gate from off the Upper Gorge Road near his station, or have it hung with proper hinges. Accounts amounting to .£137 5s 2d were passed for payment, and the Council adjourned till Feb. 1.
