O:n Sunday afternoon John M'Leod, bedroom steward on board the Eotomahana, jumped overboard and was drowned. It is believed that he committed suicide. A life-buoy was thrown to him and a boat was iaunched in charge of the third officer, but nothing was seen of M'Leod. He' was, twenty-five years of age, single, and a native of Glasgow. He had no relatives in the colony. . TIMAEU, Jan. 7. Mr. F, W. Wake, 8. A., head-master of the Timaru school for . six years past, has 'resigned : owing to ill-health j and relinquishes the profession. ' DUNEDIN, Jan. 7. William Story has been committed for trial on three charges of false pretences. ■' INVEECAEGILL, Jan. 7. At the Police Court, a young man named John Lawson, was charged with having attempted to shoot himself, and Was rer manded. — Another young man, James Spence, who was before the Supreme Court, Dunedin, at the last sittings for attempted suicide, was charged with stealing a horse, and was remanded.
