A SENSATIONAL BALLOON ASCENT.

SIDNEY, Jan. 5
A sensational balloon ascent' was made this afternoon from Clifton Gardens by Miss Leila Adair, a* Well-known aeronaut in thie 1 presence of several thousand persons-. She ascended- to a height of about eight hundred' yards and therff detached the parachute. The woman,, swinging to the trapeze of the parachute drifted over and fell into the harbour. She was noticed by two fishermen, who went to- her assistance- and fbund her hanging with head down in the water and entangled in the parachute. When rescued she was unconscious and almost dead, but
is recovering.

A young, man named M'Alister went to his assistance, but could not swim. Both grasped each other and sank, and would have been drowned but for the timely arrival of -Mr Bell.
A boy named Sheean, aged eight, was drowned m the city salt-water baths tonight. He was suddenly missed. Mr Glover, custodian, at once jumped in' and ,got him out. He showed signs of. life, but died. ,

»10/ , NELSON, Jan. 6. At btanley Brook, on Jan. 2, a young woman named May Annie Biggs, had a sunstroke, and died soon afterwards.
A lad named William Home, aged eighteen, was admitted into the hospital on Saturday- suffering from a severe eunstroke. This is the fourth case of Btmstroke received into the hospital within the hist fortnight. At eleven o'clock on Saturday night a man named Henry Towler was admitted into the hospital. He had been thrown out of a cart. Medical examination showed that his shoulder was dislocated, and he had received a cut on his right eye. On Saturday afternoon a woman named Mrs Maulsaid, of 93, Cashel Street, was taken to the hospital suffering from a severe sprain of her ankle. She had slipped while walking. The man Donnelly, who was run over by acab recently, died, at the hospital at one o'clock yesterday morning. An inqueßt will be held to-day. At the inquest into the death of 'Henry Squire, who was drowned in the Pareora River on Friday afternoon, the jury added a rider to their verdict of accidental death, calling the attention of the County Council to the dangerous nature of the spot where the accident happened. The • deceased leaves a widow and eight young children. He. has two brothers farming in the district, at Pareora and Kakahu. :
