THE STORM AT OAMARU.
EXTENSIVE DAMAGE. [Per Press Association.] OAMAEU, Jan. 6.
Yesterday's storm turns out to have been purely local, and, consequently, the crops in the district have escaped. The damage was confined mainly to the town, where almost every pane of glass in. skylights was smashed to atoms, the trees were .threshed to tatters, and the ' fruit, vegetables and flowers were all ruined. Bulleid and Co., drapers, .estimate their loss at ,£IOOO, their extensive skylights being all broken, and the; stock greatly damaged by water. Many others have suffered heavy loss. Many hailstones fell from five to. eight inches in circumference, and in some cases they • pierced corrugated iron roofs. The seawas'churned to foam by the falling stones, and the splash of individual stones in. the sea could be discerned by lookers on half a mile away. The cattle and stock exposed were driven frantic, and are bruised and swollen. Some slight stock fatalities are reported. The trees, both orchard and ornamental, look as if they had been subjected to a blight of caterpillers. Tne fall is unexampled in the memory of any of the residents.
