A PHENOMENAL HAILSTORM.
GREAT DAMAGE AT OAMARU.
WINDOWS BROKEN AND ORCHARDS
RUINED, [Peb Press Association.]
OAMAEU, Jan. 5. The most disastrous hailstorm ever experienced in this district took place this afternoon. It was preceded by a number of thunder peals, and then great blocks of ice fell, smashing down everything before them. Greenhouses were stripped of their glass, windows were broken and trees partially denuded of their leaves. The fruit crop is ruined, and it is a fortunate thing that the storm did nofc extend over the wholo district, otherwise 'the crops would have suffered serious injury. The area affected seems to have been limited tothree or four miles outside the town, but the information on this point is not yet of a definite description. Some of the pieces of ice measured 4Jin round, and although the storm only lasted about twenty minutes it left a trail of destruction: unexampled in the history of the district..
