WORK AND WAGES.
THE NEWCASTLE COAL TEADE, [Special to Press Association.^
NEWCASTLE, Deo. 8.
The Mayor presided over a conference of colliery-owners to discuss means to improve the coal trade. Four of the largest owners were not represented, which is taken as an indication that they are not/in sympathy with the movement. Several members strongly supported the re-establishment of the vend system, and pooling the profits, with a coal office in Newcastle to regulate classification and the price of coal. It was stated that the system worked so, well, in the southern colliery districts that when the present agreement ran out at the end of. the year it was sure to be renewed. On the other hand, were made that when a proprietors' association previously existed in Newcastle many members of it, by granting rebates and allowing discount, rendered it practically non-effective by undercutting^ and placed those who had observed the true spirit of the agreement at a great disadvantage. The conference appointed a committee to inquire into: methods of improving the trade, and the vend and pooling system, also to try and induce owners at present standing aloof -to join the movement. ■'
