Mr Baesell appeared for both the accused. Behren pleaded guilty, and Baker not guilty. , On the application of Inspector Broham the charge against Baker was withdrawn. Mr Bussell asked the Bench to admit the accused Bebren to probation. The mnn wss a respectable farmer, living at Tai Tapu, and Btole the sherry when under the influence of liquor. He had been stopping at Tattersall's Hotel, and since Saturday last had spent £5 or M in drink. Accused wai remanded till next day for the report of the probation officer. Stealing a Bell.— .Two small boys, named Leonard Coker and Arthur Coker, were charged with having stolen, on Nov. 28, a bell value la, the property of John Spiller. The boys admitted the offence. It appeared that they went' into the waiting-room at Mr SpiUei'a studio and took the bell. off a table. Their mother waain receipt of cheritable aid, and was not capable of looking after her children ; her husband deserted her some years ago. Inspector Broham said the boys had been pilfering about the town, and frequently slept out at night.'. The Bench convicted the boys and ordered them to be taken before the S tipendiary Magistrate. Committed ro Bubnham. — Leonard Coker, nine j-ears, and Arthur Coker, eight years, wbo naa been convictea toy Justices on a oharge of stealing a handbell, were brought before his Worship. Inspector Broham asked that the boys might be sent to Burnham. Their mother was in the Convalescent Home, and the father had disappeared. The boys were committed to the Burnham Industrie! School, to be brought up in the Presbyterian faith. Civil .Caseb.— Judgment was given for plaintiffs by default in the cases of W. F. Warner v. G. C. Eussell, claim £22 12s, and J.Kent v. ; C. W. Wells, JBL— & M. Wilkie v. S. Dennis, olaim JS4 3s on judgment summons. Mr M'Connell appeared for the judgment creditor.
