1 The name of Lord Danraven is in every- : one's mouth. He began life as a soldier, i and entered the Ist Life Guards in 186S, j in whioh corpa he speedily attained to fame as a steeplechase rider. In 1867 he went to Abyssinia as war correspondent for the Daily Telegraph, and discharged the same duty in the Franco-German^ War. The year after the war he succeeded to the title, and devoted himself to politics with the energy which he has given all his life to sport. He has been Undersecretary for the Colonies in two Unionist Administrations. He is one of the few London County Councillors possessed, of an attractive literary style, whioh he has used to adorn such apparently diverse sabjeots as Fair Trade, the Rooky Mountains, the Soudan, and Irish architecture. .News baß been received of the death of Makololo, one of Livingstone's most faithful followers in Africa from 1851 to 1864. What makes his taking off the sadder is the fact that he left forty-five widows to mourn him. A summons was granted by a London magistrate against a lodger whoj before quitting his apartments, was alleged to have wilfully deposited a dead rat in the 1 water-cistern from which the family drank ■ for a month before discovering the presence of the animal.
