Mr Richard Carter, landing surveyor at Dunedin, is to take the post of landing surveyor here, vacated by the recent *etirement of Mr LaiDg. Mr C. S. Nixon, collector at New Plymouth, is to be landing surveyor at Dunedin. Mr J, P. Ridings, landing waiter at Dunedin, is to be collector at Oamaru. Mr Bedford, first clerk at Auckland, ia to be polleotor at New Plymouth, and Mr R. Dignan, landing waiter at Auckland, is to be promoted to the position of first clerk at that place. BLENHEIM, Nov. 9.
A te&t case under Sections 15 and 16 of the Inspection of Machinery Aot, 1882, was heard by the S.M., when William pollard, manager of the Dungree station, was fined 5s and costs for having a waterwheel shaft unfenced. The Magistrate pointed out that the terms of the sections were very far reaching, but thai the daoiaioD ia the caHe must not be taken as a precedent. W. M. Mowatt, chief inspector of machinery, gave evidence on b'&baU of the Pablie Works Department, whioh was represented by Mr M'Gallum, the Crown solioitor.
