LABOUR DAY.

m FPeb Pbess Association.! WELLINGTON, Ocr. 9, Although the rain cleared away in the morning, the day turned out very windy, and was not as agreeable for the demonstration sports as conld have been wished. Late in the afternoon heavy rain came on again. The Hons E. J. Seddon, J. G. ■ Ward and W. P. Beeves visited the ground and delivered short addresses, the Premier laying atresa on the fact that there had not been a single industrial dispute during the year. About four thousand people vieited the ground. The principal event, the Demonstration Handicap of four distances up to half, a mile, to which the Bland Holt Cup ia attached, was won by Fitzgerald. DUNEDIN, Oct. 9. The day was generally observed as a holiday in honour of Labour Day, but the pleasure of holiday-makers was marred by a Btrong wind, which blew from all quarters and raised clouds of dust.\ The trades demonstration was fairly successful, the procession being about the same aa that of last year. The sports were attended by between three thousand and four thousand persons. The number of trades which took parh in the Labour Day procession was somewhat disappointing. The butchers and bakers were mounted or in carts, and the coal merchants, brewers, grocers, &c, made a good turn-out, but those on foot were confined to engineers (30), seamen (60) and bootmakers (SO) with bands. At the sports, the Labour Day Handicap, of 120 yds and 250yde, waa won by E. Fraser, and Gillipan and Gray divided second and third. Wrestling, two atyleß— M. Powley 1, Churchill 2. Mile Walk— W.
